Huge collection of golf card sets and near sets includes all of the ones listed below;
Golf Set Collection of 11 Including American Golfers, Golfing Greats, The Ryder Cup, Open Champions and More
More indeed and more prerequisites to a big-time golf card stash, with (68) informative “Sportcaster” golf cards (late-1970s) leading chronologically. Champions of the Masters tournament (66) from ’93 features killer photography, as does ’93 Fax Pax (40) from the U.K. Eight small sets (15-25 cards) include five depicting golfing greats in swell artwork, while tobacco card-size sets total three and include two “Greats from the States” issues. A repro set of Wills’ 1930 Famous Golfers and a ‘90s set picturing the best of the ‘40s and ‘50s complete the booty, in tiptop shape.
1920s and 1930s Bobby Jones Card and Stereo View Card Collection of 3
Fantastic trio starring the formidable Bobby Jones includes tell-tale text on the back of two cigarette cards, with a 1928 (EX) Churchman card praising “is usually regarded as the greatest golf genius of the age...” and “The most amazing golfer of the century” leading off the description on the 1935 Pattreiouex card (EX-MT). “A human machine of perfect driving and accurate putting” is also included, while real photos are also used on the thick, (curved but crease-free) stereo view picturing Jones playing out of a sand trap at Winged Foot Country Club. Superb!
1926 Imperial Tobacco "Smokers' Golf Cards" Collection of 49
Smokers in Canada had quite a task back in 1926 assembling a complete set of these little cards or putting together a run that would be exchangeable for six “Perils of Early Golf” 9” by 11-3/4” pictures. With seven different “scores” for 18 holes, 126 different cards were available and a hole 1-18 run totaling exactly 72 strokes was needed for the premiums! We count 44 different here, with five duplicates. A few multiple or heavily-creased cards, but overall, acceptable VG to VG+ condition.
1934 W.A. & A.C. Churchman "3 Jovial Golfers" Complete 36-Card Set
A trio of jovial golfers, Mr. Tiger, Mr. Rabbit and Mr. Everyman, are in search of the perfect course in this humorous cigarette card set. The three characters are depicted playing holes at various British courses, including St. Andrews, Royal St. George’s, Royal Lytham and St. Annes, Muirfield and Hoylake. The cards include “Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain and Ireland), Limited” on the back and are in nice collectible condition, with intermittent dinged corners and light corner/edge wear, but no unsightly creases.
1935 Ardath Tobacco Co. "Sports Champions" Near Complete Set (48/50) with Cotton and Wilson
Appealing colors and swell close-ups are in this group of cards featuring top pre-war athletes in Great Britain. For golf enthusiasts, T.H. (Henry) Cotton and Enid Wilson lead the way, the former bringing the British Open championship back to England in 1934 and the latter a three-time winner. Other golfers are Pam Barton and A.H. Padgham, with #2-Don Bradman a prominent cricketer. Boxing, tennis, football, rugby football and other sports are represented, with crease-free cards featuring a subtle indentation at a corner or two and “1935” in pen on the back of card #50. Missing are #s 26 and 34.
1924 W.D. & H.O. Wills ''Golfing'' Complete 25-Card Set
Fascinating golf scenery and a splendid British golf lesson are offered with these nifty cards issued with Wills Cigarettes. A different golf course/club is depicted on each, with an interesting description of its history on the back. Well-known to even the casual golf observer over the years are St. Andrew’s, Turnberry, Royal St. George’s, Troon and Muirfield, all sites of “The Open” championship. Cards exhibit light handling and wear with very few creases and are generally in VG-EX and EX shape, with five cards including not-drastic tape/adhesive marks on the reverse.
1925 Imperial Tobbacco "How To Play Golf" Complete 50-Card Set with Abe Mitchell
Issued in Canada, these tobacco cards enabled their owners to learn how to play golf or better their games. Giving tips were Arthur G. Havers, Abe Mitchell and George Duncan, with Havers appearing on 30 of the 50 cards, Mitchell 11 and Duncan nine. Intriguing images and tips on driving, iron shots, “mashie” shots, “niblick” in a bunker and putting are included, along with proper stance, grip and finish of swing advice. More prerequisites to an important golf card collection, these have survived in attractive crease-free EX-or-better condition and average EX+.
1927 W.A. & A.C. Churchman "Famous Golfers" Complete 50-Card Set With Jones, Hagen and Morris
American R. T. “Bobby” Jones had recently become the first amateur to win back-to-back British Open titles (1926, ’27) when this card set was issued in England, featuring multiples of many golfers. Bobby’s card #27 is VG+ due to a light “back” crease, while his #28 example is EX. It, like several cards, has the subtlest of indentations at some corners from once having been stored in an album. Displaying as an attractive EX-EX+ set, the group also includes two of Walter Hagen, one of Tom Morris and four of Harry Vardon, all in similar crease-free condition and awaiting a golf card shrine.
1930 W.D. & H.O. Wills ''Famous Golfers'' Complete 25-Card Set with Hagen, Braid & Cotton
The masterful artwork of H. H. Harris, along with some of the top golfers of the era, star in this charismatic card set, with swell write-ups including “The greatest showman golf has ever known” on the back of Walter Hagen’s (VG+) card. Other notables include #1-James Braid (paper loss, back damage), 3-Henry Cotton (VG+) and 22-Harry Vardon (EX). Moderate corner and edge wear throughout renders the average VG with however not many creases. Tape on the back of 14-Massy, one low grade filler (#17) and intermittent lightly soiled backs are to mention, along with, you’ll be looking at the fronts!
1991 Pro Line Portraits Payne Stewart Autographed Card
The image of the late Payne Stewart kissing the trophy emblematic of the U.S. Open Golf Championship in 1991 combines with his black sharpie autograph on the back of this trading card for a stirring offering. A popular star on the PGA Tour, Stewart won in ’91 at Hazeltine and claimed his second U.S. Open title at Pinehurst in ’99. Just four months later though he died in a plane crash en route to the final tournament of that season, in Houston. Card is embossed with a “Certified Authentic” stamp in the lower right corner and is in crease-free NM condition.
