Officially recognized as the “Super Bowl” starting with the 1969 AFL-NFL Championship Game, it wouldn’t be until after his passing in 1970 that the Super Bowl trophy would come to be known as the “Vince Lombardi Trophy”, honoring the winning coach of the first two Championship Games. In this lot we have programs for Super Bowl III, IV and V. The third installment took place on Jan 12 1969 in Miami. Well remembered for Joe Namath’s unabashed prediction of victory for the Jets, his team lived up to his boast, handing the Baltimore Colts a huge upset. Super Bowl IV witnessed the Chiefs handily defeat the Vikings 23-7, with this being the last AFL vs NFL meeting, as the leagues merged after the season. Super Bowl V was played on Jan 17 1971 in Miami, and it would be known as the “Blunder Bowl”, as it was filled with penalties and turnovers. The Baltimore Colts would walk away victorious, defeating Dallas who were making their first Super Bowl appearance.
The condition for each offered Super Bowl program is as follows. 1) Super Bowl III. At roughly 8” x 11”, the 120 page program exhibits just light handling wear to the cover, including some light toning and the odd small surface dent or crease. The spine exhibits very light wear, with the interior clean and problem free. 2) Super Bowl IV. At roughly 8” x 11”, the 128 page program shows light wear on the cover, along with some slight colour loss near the spine. The interior remains clean, with just the odd tiny mark or surface crease. 3) Super Bowl V. Again measuring in at roughly 8” x 10”, the 100 page program exhibits just light handling wear and toning to the cover, along with some light wear at the bottom of the spine. There are also some surface scratches present on the front and back. The interior remains clean and problem free.
