Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

Taken in by over a quarter of a million people which shattered the old mark from the previous year, the 1912 World Series was closely contested, with four of the eight games decided by only one run. In this lot we have programs from both Fenway and the Polo Grounds, including a scarce Game 1 example from New York, along with an unscored/undated program from Boston. Despite being evenly matched, the eighth and deciding game (Game 2 ended in a 6-6 tie - called due to darkness) witnessed Fred Snodgrass’ famous muff along with the missed opportunity to field Tris Speaker’s foul popup, which resulted in a 3-2 Boston victory for their second-ever World Series win. This marked the first time the Series was decided in the last inning of the final game.
The larger of the two at roughly 9” x 11”, the Polo Grounds program for Game 1 remains in beautiful supple condition, fully complete and intact. Once folded in half, the program sports a vertical crease that while distinct, does little to affect the display value. There is a tiny edge tear along the bottom of the spine, as well as a second small tear on the right side edge near the middle. With a bright and vibrant cover, the program exhibits beautifully and considering its vintage, can be considered a higher grade example. The accompanying Fenway program is 7” x 10”, and is loaded with player images along with interesting period advertisements. The front and back covers are almost completely detached, and there is some staining and light soiling from water damage along the bottom right section, and this continues on into the first couple pages. While not scored, there are some pencil marks/notations present, along with some small additional staining on the upper left and right portions of the back cover. Despite these flaws, the program displays well. This is an ideal opportunity to add a pair of desirable antique 1912 World Series programs to your collection.
