The Jack Adams Award was introduced in 1973-74 to recognize the NHL’s coach of the year on an annual basis. HOF Flyers coach Fred Shero was the inaugural recipient of the award that honors Adams, who passed away in 1968. This is the commemorative Jack Adams Award personal trophy that was presented to the family of the legendary Detroit Red Wings coach. Silver-plated cup with two handles features a hockey player on its lid and stands on a wood base with a plaque on the front with a picture of Adams, the award’s name and a description of what it represents. Included is an 8x10 photo of Montreal’s Scotty Bowman receiving his 1976-77 award from Ted Lindsay and Adams’ widow, Helen.
The trophy has acquired a golden patina and displays some cleanable tarnish on the bowl of the cup. The base of the silver-plated cup has a handwritten number across the front.
“Oct 20 1977 Pre-game ceremonies at Olympia (Montreal at Detroit) Ted Lindsay, Helen Adams (Mrs Jack) presenting Scotty Bowman w/ 1976/77 ‘Jack Adams Coach of the Year’ Award” is handwritten on the reverse of the 8x10 photo.
