Memorial Cup winners in 1935, 1937 and 1946, the Winnipeg Monarchs were the second team in the River City to use that moniker, forming in 1930 and playing in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. This Monarchs sweater originates from the 1939-40 MJHL season, and it was worn by legendary Hall of Famer Bill Mosienko. A partially detached label from Dominion Knit Winnipeg sits along the collar, with the antique sweater measuring roughly 23” from the top of the front collar to the bottom of the lower front band, with each sleeve approx. 25” from the collar to the bottom of each cuff. Styled with an attractive purple “W” in thick felt, “Monarchs” has been placed across the chest diagonally along with a felt “8” on verso. An LOA will accompany.
Originally obtained from Bill Mosienko’s brother, the sweater remains in beautiful condition, exhibiting the typical problems that plague antique wools. Holes are present above the team crest, on both shoulders and on the lower front, with larger examples around both elbows. Heavy team repairs are also present around the affected elbows. The “8” on verso has also come loose in a few spots, mainly along the top portion. The garment’s colours remain bold and vivid, and it display’s extremely well overall.
The original Winnipeg Monarchs were a senior team formed in 1906. Early Hall of Fame legends that suited up for the historic team include Fred “Steamer” Maxwell and Dick Irvin. The Monarchs were Allan Cup winners in 1915, with each player awarded a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle by the city of Winnipeg.
A survivor of Winnipeg’s rough and rugged North End, Bill Mosienko played all of his youth hockey in his hometown, before embarking on a 14-season Hall of Fame career with the Chicago Black Hawks. Remembered chiefly for his unbreakable record of three goals scored in 21 seconds, four more seasons back in Winnipeg were played with the Warriors of the WHL before Mosienko retired in 1959.
