Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

Remembered for the devastating hits he delivered, Jack Stewart first received attention from Red Wings owner James Norris while playing for the Portage Terriers in his home province of Manitoba. This Terriers sweater was originally acquired directly from the Stewart family which had stated that it was a jersey worn by Stewart with the team. A partially detached Dominion Knit Winnipeg tag sits on the collar, with “Terriers” slightly arching across the chest in thick felt. With no evidence of ever having a back number affixed, the sweater exemplifies depression-era frugality, with contemporary repairs on the front and back necklines, beneath the team crest and on both sleeves. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany this desirable antique sweater.
A number of small holes are also present, scattered about, with larger examples on the left sleeve and verso. As a point of reference regarding sizing, the sweater measures roughly 23” from the top of the front collar to the bottom hem, with each sleeve approx. 22” from the shoulder seams to the bottom of each cuff. Stewart played for the Portage Terriers in 1935-36 and 1936-37.
