Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016

Originally named as Canada’s best junior player by Montreal GM Frank Selke in the late-1940’s, Dickie Moore first saw action with Les Canadiens in 1951-52, staying with the club for a dozen memorable seasons which would include six Stanley Cups, along with Art Ross Trophy’s in 1958 and ’59 and six All-Star Game appearances. Moore also once held the single-season point record of 96, when he surpassed Gordie Howe’s total of 95 set in 1952-53. Remembered for his accurate shot and exceptional stick-handling ability, the scoring race of 1957-58 best exemplifies Moore as a consummate team player. Tight in the lead with line-mate Henri Richard, Moore was injured and asked Toe Blake to sideline him, as he didn’t want his diminished play to cost Richard the scoring race. The response from Henri and fellow linemate The Rocket was unequivocal - “There’s no damned way he’s going off the line.” Moore would end his amazing career with a swan-song appearance for the St. Louis Blues, contributing 14 postseason points as the Blues advanced to the Cup final in their inaugural season. Finishing with over 600 NHL career points, Moore would be rightfully enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1974.
With the sad and unfortunate passing of the Montreal legend in December, we here at Classic Auctions are proud and honoured to present Moore’s game-worn 1952-53 Montreal Canadiens sweater, and it’s been photo-matched! Tagging from team store supplier Raymond Hardware remains affixed to the collar. With the classic red, white and blue felt team crest featured on the garment’s front, the white on blue felt number "12" on verso exhibits zig-zag pattern affixation. Stylistically dated, these wool sweaters were worn by Montreal in the early-1950s. Game-wear on the vintage garment includes over 2 dozen small holes present, along with 3 team repairs, with examples on the lower front, back and right sleeve. There is also some slight tearing/fraying to the left cuff worth noting. The sweater has been photo-matched to the 1952-53 Montreal Canadiens team photo by the unique and distinct placement of the hand-sewn CH team crest. The placement angle of the back numbers also provides a style-match, as 2 images taken from an undated video clip show Moore wearing a sweater with similarly placed numbers.
While the hobby cognoscenti are astutely aware, we feel we should emphasize the lack of quality vintage wool sweater’s that become available at auction, especially examples from extremely prominent Hall of Fame players. With his important status within the Bleu Blanc Rouge, this wondrous Dickie Moore game-worn sweater is a true “La Sainte Flanelle”, and will nicely augment even the most advanced world-class wool collection. Originally obtained from Moore’s brother, a signed letter from Dickie Moore attesting to that fact will accompany. Please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
