Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015

This amazing and very rare find is Wayne Gretzky’s 1978-79 Edmonton Oilers WHA rookie season game-used Northland stick. “Gretzky” is stamped on both sides and “425035” is stamped on the back of the shaft of this treasure from the 17-year-old phenom’s debut in the last gasp season of the rebel league. The Registered Pattern Number “7055” stamped on each side is one that young Gretz only used with the Oilers. While the accompanying LOA signed by John Atkins, who was the Cincinnati Stingers’ assistant equipment manager from 1977-79, states that it is a Gretzky Indianapolis Racers stick, Gretzky did not play against the Stingers as a member of the Racers, but he did play against Indianapolis with Edmonton before the Racers folded. Wayne’s familiar No. 99 is handwritten in marker below the knob. “Gretzky” in the middle of the shaft was handwritten at the Northland factory while producing the stick. Wayne’s vintage tape job remains on the knob and the blade remains in its original untaped condition. Comes with an LOA from 1977-79 Stingers assistant equipment manager John Atkins.
Well preserved stick has nice game wear on the bottom edge with a very small chip on one side of the blade. Game use also includes black marks on the blade and lower shaft, and some red paint transfer on the top edge below the middle of the shaft.
