Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/20/2023
Already a two-time Vezina Trophy winner in his young National Hockey League career by the time the mid-1990s rolled around, Ed Belfour, who had used masks made by noted maker Greg Harrison in the early part of the decade, made the switch to Warwick made buckets following the 1993-94 campaign with this mask offered here an early prototype made for Belfour by the company. All black in colour and void of a cage over the front, a single white coloured “Warwick” wordmark logo decorates the crown of the forehead while a similar one is found at the bottom of the plain black backplate on the reverse. Sporting a pair of Gary E. Warwick labels that have been affixed to the inside individually behind the ears, an additional Warwick decal listing the date of production as August 31st, 1994 is found on the interior behind the right ear and has had “Ed Belfour” penned to it as well. Featuring a plain white strapping harness that has “Warwick” over the reverse, the mark shows light signs of use via scratches and scuffs over the shell while light soiling is present on the interior though it is unclear as to whether or not this is from on ice use or age/handling. With the padding all still present on the interior along with the cloth sweatband, it is worth noting for accuracy that the black coloured dust decorating the interior comes from the inside of the Warwick bag the mask is accompanied by. A fabulous piece from the personal collection of Hall of Fame goalkeeper Ed Belfour, the piece comes accompanied by his signed LOA.
