Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/3/2015
Coming off an exciting Allan Cup win as the senior amateur hockey champions of Canada in 1957, the Whitby Dunlops were then chosen as defending champions to represent Canada at the 1958 World Championships in Oslo Norway. After the bitterness of Canada not winning gold at the 1956 Olympics and a boycott of the '57 World Championships because of the Soviet Union's invasion of Hungary that year, the Dunlops won over Canadian hockey fans while bringing the world title back to Canada in what is remembered as one of the top achievements in Canadian hockey history.
This absolutely gorgeous yellow and black Whitby Dunlops alternate captain’s wool sweater was game-worn by the tournament's winning goal scorer Bob Attersley! With no tagging present, the jersey features a large felt team crest with screened-on name and accents as well as four highly detailed felt maple leafs running across the upper chest. The maple leafs are again repeated on back with five spread across the neckline below “Canada”, while the thick felt numbers are affixed with a zig-zag sewing pattern. We have to again stress this sweaters historical importance as it was worn throughout the 1958 World Championships including the gold medal game, where it witnessed history on the back of the tournaments winning goal scorer Bob Ateersley. It should also be noted that this sweater was worn during a 14-game exhibition tour of Europe that preceded the tournament as well. Signed LOA’s from Attersley will accompany this historic museum-quality sweater. Please refer to the Classic Auctions website for a complete analysis regarding this sweaters condition.
A number of small holes are present throughout including on both sleeves and on the sweater’s front, and there are at least 5 team repairs with three on the back as well as one on each sleeve’s elbow area. The team crest shows some fabric loss to the left of the “W”, as well as some flaking to the screened-on name and accents. Some loose threading around the top perimeter of the crest is also present. The jersey exhibits a few small stains, with examples on the back and front bottom hem as well as on the upper left chest.
