Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015

Astounding early hockey championship award is this magnificent London Free Press Trophy. Featuring a superb three-dimensional plaque of a scene of three skaters battling for puck possession on the front of the bowl, this silver-plated cup with two ornate handles has the trophy's name beautifully etched below the lip of the cup, with "Northern Hockey League Senior Championship" engraved below the 3-D plaque. The cup stands 15" tall from the base to the lip, with an extra half-inch height when measured at the top of both handles. This perpetual trophy has become detached from its original wood base, which would have indicated the year-by-year championship plaques of the winning teams. Difference in the engraving style of the "WOAA Intermediate B" on the wider lower bowl indicates that the trophy was likely recycled for use by what was presumably the Western Ontario Athletic Association. The trophy exhibits expected tarnishing and some color loss and discoloration inside the bowl. Obvious handling shows in nicks and marks, particularly along the lip of the cup, and dents in the wide lower bowl. Overall this championship trophy from the early days of hockey in Western Ontario is a great find for a historical award collection.
