Sweet collection of cuts signed by early Governor Generals of Canada including the first in that role, Charles Monck, who served as top dog from 1867 to 1868. There's also Lord Dufferin, Canada's third Governor General (1872-1878); Canada's fourth Governor General, the Duke of Argyll (1878-1883), who has signed two separate cuts; and Victor Cavendish, the 9th Duke of Devonshire and 11th Governor General from 1916 to 1921, has signed a cut, as has his wife Evelyn. Also included are two sepia-toned cabinet photos measuring 2 1/2" x 4", with one of the Marquis of Lorne (the Duke of Argyll), and the other of Princess Louise, wife of the Duke of Argyll and daughter of Queen Victoria. Charles Monck has signed a small cut, measuring 3/4” x 2”, simply as “Monck” in fountain pen which has experienced some ink bleeding but remains clearly legible. Lord Dufferin has signed two cuts – a 3/4” x 2” mounted on slightly larger stock paper and signed as “Yours sincerely Dufferin”, and another measuring 2 3/4” x 5” addressed to a member of the Home Department and signed as “Dufferin”. The Duke of Argyll has signed two separate cuts, both mounted on slightly larger stock, and both signed as “Argyll”. Victor Cavendish has signed a 1 1/2” x 4 1/2” cut simply as “Devonshire”, and his wife Evelyn has signed another of the same size as “Yours aff, Evelyn Devonshire”. All signatures are in exceptional condition aside from the bleeding on "Monck”, while the two heavy stock photos are also in nice shape with residue on the back corners from being attached to the pages of an album.
