Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014

Cool game-worn Prince George Cougars jersey worn and signed by by none other than Dustin Byfuglien during Big Buff’s last of three seasons with the WHL club before venturing onward and upward into the world of pro hockey. Tagged in the collar as a “Reebok CHL” with a size 56 flap just below, this gamer shows not only marks scattered about the front, back, and on both sleeves, but also a couple of substantial team repairs including one that makes its way from the collar down to the team crest, and another more than six inches long on the back that touches the number "33", a number not worn by any other player for all of the 2000s in regular season. Blue paint and board burns are found on the left sleeve, while the right shoulder has several small unrepaired holes. Marks and puckering are noticeable on the team crest as well. Aside from the great game wear that fills this Big Buff WHL gamer, we also see evidence of a former nameplate and also evidence of a former alternate’s captain’s A on the leaft breast, just below the number “7” patch, which is a story in itself. The previous season, 2003-04, number 7 was worn by a young fellow named Mike Fogolin, son of former NHLer Lee Fogolin. Young Fogolin was just 16 years old when he skated for the Cougars that season, but sadly, on May 26, 2004, the kid with the big smile and bright future passed away in his sleep of a possible heart condition at his parent’s home in Edmonton , which shocked the hockey community across the country. Friends of Mike’s dad like Wayne Gretzky, Paul Coffey, and Grant Fuhr attended the funeral, and the number 7 patch was worn on the Cougars’ jerseys for the 2004-05 campaign. This jersey worn by Big Buff, who would lead the team that year with 58 points, is important for all the Big Buff reasons, and is also a lasting tribute to young Mike Fogolin.
