It was a new and shiny scoreboard, nine feet long and four feet high, positioned in Montreal's new Delorimier Park, home of the fabled Montreal Royals of the International League. The scoreboard, an important feature in any park, gave fans at Delorimier an idea of how teams from the International, National, American, and American Association were doing during those days in the 1930s when times were hard and baseball was great. This wonderful treasure of yesteryear was professionally restored by the McCord Museum in Montreal and was displayed at the "Play Ball Montreal" exhibit in 2000. It features the striking red, white and green "Sweet Caporal" at the top, with the teams and divisions listed below, ranging from the Braves and Red Sox in Boston, to the Giants and Yankees in New York, from the Browns and Cardinals in St. Louis, Royals in Montreal, and Toledo and Jersey City and all the great pro teams from the day. Just a fabulous relic from another era, and if you listen closely, you might hear the crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, and hawkers selling programs for a dime. Special shipping arrangement will be required. Please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve. The condition of this classic scoreboard is simply stunning, with all the original vibrant colours and lettering to behold. A slight restoration has been done to the top right of the scoreboard, a new pine contour has been added to the original one, and a few pieces of wood were added at the back to support the overall size. All of this restoration is subtle and only enhances what was already a magnificent piece. The construction of Delorimier Stadium started in January 1928 at the corner of Delorimier and Ontario Street in Montreal and was ready for the opening of the season in May of 1928. This 20,000 seater was the loving home of the Royals, a team that launched the careers of Roy Campanella, Gene Mauch, Don Drysdale, Sparky Anderson, Roberto Clemente, Chuck Connors, Tommy Lasorda, and of course, the man who broke the major-league color barrier – Jackie Robinson, who played for the Royals in 1946 and was called up to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 to make history. And those legendary Royals – 55 seasons in the International League, winner of 9 pennants, 7 league championships, and 3 Junior World Series titles. The Delorimier Stadium closed in 1960 and was demolished in 1969. “Peanuts, popcorn, crackerjacks!”
