Alex Mogilny’s 1989 IIHF World Championships game-used stick is quite possibly the last one the Russian prodigy used for the CCCP before he defected to the United States to begin his superstar NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres. Our consignor states that he attended the last few games of the 1989 worlds at Stockholm’s Globe Arena and that at the end of the final game between the Soviet Union and Sweden players from both teams tossed their sticks into the crowd. The fan who caught Mogilny’s stick bartered it with a merchandise vendor. Our consignor then offered to buy the stick from the vendor, which he did, stating that he received the stick as presented in its current condition. Most of the shaft was blackened with spray paint due to IIHF regulations regarding advertising on equipment but the paint was removed around the “Montreal” logo on the upper front of the shaft. A very faint “Mogilny” stamp can be mostly made out on the shaft with a long and thin number “10” written just below Alex’s back tape job on the knob. Well-used gamer is custom-shaved low on the shaft which displays red paint transfer. The top edge of the blade has some chips under Mogilny’s tape job. A cool piece of international hockey history.
