Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
Why would a plain, off-white wool sweater with orange and black trim on the V-neck be special? Because it was worn by referee Eusebe Daigneault on the night of December 12, 1933, when Eddie Shore ended Ace Bailey's career with a stick to the skull. This referee's sweater from the 1930s has "Daigneault" sewn in the collar, and aside from about four small holes in the front, remains in outstanding condition over all these years. According to the consignor, the NHL crest was long ago removed and sold by Daigneault's wife. Also included are vintage photos from Daigneault's estate, including two of him as a referee (one from a newspaper), along with two vintage 8" x10" photos in 12" x 14" mats, plus 3 - 8" x 10" original black and white glossy photos. The ripple effect from Shore's attack on Bailey was extraordinary. Following the incident, where the player was given only hours to live, Bailey's father boarded a train for Boston with the intent of shooting Shore, but was gently talked out of it in Boston. Bailey recovered but his career was over, Shore received a 16-game suspension, and from it all, a benefit hockey game was set up to raise money for Bailey and his family. The game was held on February 14, 1934, and from that, the All-Star game was created. The newspaper clipping including in this lot is from Nov. 16, 1934, with referees Eusebe Daigneault Odie Cleghorn (in their ref's sweaters, standing at centre ice at Madison Square Garden for the opening game of the '34 season between Toronto and the New York Americans, with Hap Day and Normie Hines preparing for the ceremonial faceoff. The 3 - 8" x 10" photos are unknown team pics. One of the large matted photos shows Daigneault posing outside an arena with a fellow referee and another gentleman, while the other matted photo is a vintage team photo as well.
