Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
Pre-war hockey card enthusiasts will likely oooh and aaahhh at the sight of this rarity; a Champs Cigarettes pack with the same image of the Stanley Cup that appears on a Champ's card in its 60-card set from 1924-25. Intriguing aspects to mention are the lack of an apostrophe in "Champs" on the pack, (while the cards themselves have "Champ's Cigarettes" on the back), and the "Series 1915" on the excise stamp. Research reveals that these stamps were used for several years; from 1915 to circa 1922-24. Text beneath the Cup's image mentions that it was "donated by the late Lord Stanley of Preston in 1893 as the world's amateur hockey championship and now represents the world's professional championship." Fascinating artifact originally held 10 smokes and has survived in splendid condition with no major/detracting tears of flaws. Advertised as "Fragrant and Cool" were Champs, with this fabulous find cool indeed and who knows, possibly originally housing a Champ's hockey card.
