Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
Contributing to the finest encapsulated hockey card collection are these down right rare treasures picturing members of the Selkirk hockey team and issued by a Winnipeg firm which manufactured Crescent Ice Cream. Leading the lineup (and the condition) at EX-MT 6 is a riveting image of Hall of Fame goaltender Charlie Gardiner, with the example here the only such Gardiner ever slabbed by PSA and one of only 31 cards (all players combined!) to land at the pro grader's headquarters. The fact that Gardiner's statistics reveal he played for the Selkirks during only the 1924-25 season spawns debate over the year of this particular Crescent issue. Not to debate is this set's number one ranking on the PSA Set Registry. Its unrivaled weighted GPA of 4.231 is obtained thanks to all but one of 13 cards being Pop-1s with none higher on the PSA Population Report. Joining Gardiner at EX-MT 6 is #5-Clark, with 7-Browne at EX+ 5.5 and a trio at EX 5; 2-Benard, 10-Turvey and 14-Neil. There's also 1-O'Meara at VG-EX+ 4.5, 4-Brandow and 11-Johanneson at VG-EX 4, 3-Speirs and 12-Woodall at VG and a pair of Good 2s; 8-Connelly and 13 McMunn, with the latter a Pop-1 with three higher. PSA considers the set complete despite the absence of a short-printed #6 (unknown player). With ridiculously low overall pop numbers, the chances of another batch of these ever being assembled/offered are similarly extremely low.
