Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

A unique and extremely scarce issue put out by O’Keefe’s Beverages to pay tribute to the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 1931-32 Stanley Cup championship was a set of 20 coasters, or “blotters” as they were referred to in an original ad, measuring 6” by 6” from their furthest points and difficult to locate in any condition. PSA Population Report figures confirm their scarcity, with just 28 total coasters sent to PSA over the years, with our consignor’s fascinating ensemble featuring 13 “highest-graded-at-PSA” examples. The coasters feature the artwork of prominent Canadian cartoon artist Lou Skuce, with their numbers matching the players’ uniform numbers. ......The brother of Hall-of-Famer Jack Darragh, Harold Darragh spent five seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and another split between the Philadelphia Quakers and Boston Bruins before landing in Toronto in time to contribute to the Leafs' Stanley Cup championship ’31-32 season, his second-to-last in the NHL. The GOOD 2 grade here lands this coaster atop the Darragh column at PSA, with the Pop-1 edging out the only other similar submission which came out at FR 1.5.
