Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
A unique and very scarce issue put out by O’Keefe’s Beverages to pay tribute to the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 1931-32 Stanley Cup championship was a set of 20 coasters, or “blotters” as they were referred to in an original ad, measuring 6” by 6” from their furthest points and difficult to locate in any condition. PSA Population Report figures confirm their scarcity, with just 28 total coasters sent to PSA over the years, with our consignor’s stirring ensemble featuring 13 “highest-graded-at-PSA” examples. The coasters feature the artwork of prominent Canadian cartoon artist Lou Skuce, with their numbers matching the players’ uniform numbers. ......Frank Finnegan had spent seven seasons with Ottawa when he was picked up by Toronto in the Dispersal Draft of 1931, helping the Maple Leafs to Lord Stanley’s precious trophy in ’31-32, only to return to the Senators in ’32-33. Contributing to the O’Keefe’s coaster issue, this example is slabbed PR 1 by PSA and is bettered on the company pop chart by the only other Finnegan piece, a GOOD 2 example.
