Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

Another hobby event here, with this, the one and only 100% complete 1923-24 William Paterson V145-1 set to ever show up on the PSA Set Registry. Also The Number One Finest Set of All-Time and ranking at the top of the Current Finest list, it boasts the almost unheard of Bert Corbeau card, one that was printed in limited quantities back in the day so as to reduce the amount of possible complete sets. The back of each "Paterson Hockey League Bar" wrapper explained how a pair of skates would be sent to anyone sending a 40-card set to the Brantford, Ontario company. The Corbeau here was indeed part of a set that was redeemed and thus has a punch hole in it, but displays better than its technical grade of PR 1 and is the only "cancelled" Corbeau on the PSA Population Report. As for the extraordinary high grade cards which accompany it, 23 of them are of the none-higher-at-PSA variety, with 17 Pop-1s alone in first place in their respective slots on the PSA pop chart - highly impressive. Leading is a NM-MT 8 card of #12-Sylvio Mantha RC, one of just four V145-1 cards, (all players combined - over 1000 cards examined by PSA graders over the years), to earn such a lofty mark. Just behind at NM+ 7.5 is 29-Vernon Forbes, while Pop-1 NM 7 PSA leaders are 10-Cy Denneny, 13-Joe Malone, 23-Babe Dye, 27-Stan Jackson, 34-Ken Randall, 37-Eddie Bouchard and 39-Chas. Fraser, with all but the Malone considered rookie cards. Also meriting NM 7 recognition are 7-Clint Benedict, 8-Lionel Hitchman RC, 11-Sprague Cleghorn, 21-Lloyd Andrews RC, 33-Leo Reise RC and 36-Jesse Spring RC. Key rookie cards slabbed EX-MT+ 6.5 include icons 3-King Clancy (Pop-1, none higher) and 14-Aurele Joliat (Pop-2, 2 higher), with 19-Georges Vezina also at 6.5 (Pop-1, none higher). Meanwhile, the set's key card, the coveted rookie card of hockey immortal Howie Morenz is an EX 5 (Pop-7, 3 higher). All grades are viewable on the PSA Set Registry, with the "Simgin" entry carrying a smashing weighted GPA and set rating of 5.82. A truly remarkable accomplishment, the stupendous set will be a cornerstone of an encapsulated pre-war collection.
