Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

Imperial Tobacco's third hockey card effort has proven to be the most difficult for collectors of the "C" sets to piece together, with PSA population numbers confirming the relative scarcity of C57 cards; just 13 sets show up on the PSA Set Registry, with this terrific ensemble second only to one and one of only 4 complete sets on the PSA Set Registry. Contributing to the 50-card ensemble's excellent GPA of 5.13 are (17) examples which have garnered EX-MT 6 status from PSA graders, including four which are tied for first place on their respective "lines" on the PSA Population Report. Legends 43-Cyclone Taylor and 48-Joe Malone, fellow Hall-of-Famer 16-Joe Hall and the rookie card of 35-Carl Kendall are the second-to-none-at-PSA entries, with other EX-MT 6 cards, the majority of them, (all but four), second only to one other similar example. HOFers slabbed EX-MT 6 are 15-Sprague Cleghorn, 18-Paddy Moran, 19-Harry Hyland, 20-Art Ross, 23-Gordon Roberts, 24-Jimmy Gardner, 25-Moose Johnson, 34-Eddie Gerard RC and 41-Lester Patrick, with the others being 6-Bernier, 12-Smith, 14-Ronan, 40-Boyce and 42-Dennison RC. Meanwhile, the number one card both numerically and in importance/value, that of Montreal Canadiens' goaltending great Georges Vezina, is a Pop-7 VG-EX 4, with just two ever receiving a higher mark in the history of PSA. As for the set's condition leaders, they are 29-Jack Darragh at 7 (MC) and a pair at EX-MT+ 6.5; 21-Glass and 39-Broughton RC. Key rookie cards are those of 2-Punch Broadbent (VG-EX 4) and 3-Clint Benedict (EX 5). The grades of all cards may be viewed at PSA under "Simgin 2". Black and white has rarely looked so good(!), with this captivating group surely piquing the interest of serious pre-war tobacco card enthusiasts.
