Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

Tantalizing historic program here is not only from the Pirates' inaugural NHL season, but also from their first-ever regular season game in Pittsburgh, and that's not all! After opening with wins in Boston and Montreal, (Vezina's last game ever), the Pirates hosted the New York Americans, curiously listed as "Madisons" on the line-up page, on December 2. With Roy Worters in goal, Lionel Conacher on defence and coached by Odie Cleghorn, the Pirates suffered their first loss ever, being edged 2-1 by the Amerks. It was actually New York's first game ever and thus first win! 14-page program is 6" by 9" with splits in the upper and lower spine and some pencil writing/marks on the interior. Some pencil writing at the top of the “Madisons” line-up page is to note, along with a one-time “8.00” selling price at the top of page three and a “15-“ price in pencil on the back cover. Fascinating content includes team pictures of the “First Championship Hockey Team” (Queen’s University, Kingston, Champions, 1888), the ’24-25 Stanley Cup champion Victoria Cougars coached by Lester Patrick and featuring a host of Hall-of-Famers, and the ’24-25 U.S. Amateur Hockey champion Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets, (who became the Pirates), including Worters and Conacher. An “Origin of Hockey” article by Capt. James T. Sutherland, others on the history of the Stanley Cup and history of hockey in the United States and one on Odie Cleghorn all add to the jackpot. A light crease down the middle, more evident from the back, is to mention, but overall, this treasure has survived remarkably well.
