The legend of Gordie Howe began on October 16, 1946, as the 18 year old rookie made his initial NHL appearance in the Detroit Red Wings' season opening game, at the Detroit Olympia against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Wearing #17, he would make quite a first impression, getting into a fight and then scoring his first ever NHL goal, beating Leafs goalie Turk Broda at 13:39 of the 2nd period on a pass from Sid Abel. He'd finish that season with a modest 7 tallies, but go on to score a record 801 goals and 1850 points over the course of his incredible 25 season NHL career, spanning five decades. He is still widely considered to be the greatest right winger to ever play the game. This complete program from his historic debut is in strong EX condition, with tiny binding holes on its left edge and the game date neatly stamped at the top of the cover, which shows a photo of Hall of Fame coach Jack Adams. Best of all, the cover features Howe's autograph in vintage ink, signed as "Gordon Howe", as he was initially known (and described in the program). A very rare treasure, and a must for any fan of "Mr. Hockey", as he is known to this day.
