There are pucks, there are special pucks, and then there are pucks to blow your mind. Not only is this little black biscuit a rare specimen indeed, a 1931 Spalding with wooden insert puck, but is - and I hope you're sitting down - the puck Howie Morenz scored with on April 14th, 1931 when the Canadiens beat the Chicago Black Hawks 2-0 in game 5 to win the Stanley Cup! This Morenz goal puck was the insurance marker in the Habs win, with Johnny Gagnon scoring the first. This wooden insert puck, which features the famous Spalding logo on both sides, is the rarest version of the Spalding puck. An extremely scarce puck, and one scored by Howie Morenz the night the Habs won the Cup. Imagine. Handwritten on this rare Spalding wooden insert puck, which has a piece of wood 2” in diameter in the core banded by ½” of smooth rubber, is "Stanley Cup Series 1930-31" and "The great Howie Morenz drove the puck in the nets for the second counter of the fifth 5th cup." This type of Spalding wooden insert puck was used only during the 1931 playoffs, and is the 1st we've ever handled. The edges were chiseled, most likely to prevent it from bouncing on the ice. Normally, Spalding pucks had sharp edges that would catch on the slightest groove. It has some chips in it, and one Spalding label is more faded than the other, but otherwise remains in nice condition. The handwritten lettering detailing Morenz' feats is still very readable. This is as
HOF-worthy as it gets.
