Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
Fascinating grouping of rare 1973-74 London Lions memorabilia from Dennis Polonich’s personal collection. Drafted 118th overall by Detroit in the 1973 NHL Draft, the 5-foot-6, 165-pound Polonich made his pro debut with the London Lions, a unique Red Wings farm team based in England. Red Wings owner Bruce Norris founded the team, which played its home games at Wembley’s Empire Pool arena, in a bid to launch a European hockey league affiliated with the NHL. The 1973-74 London Lions played as a touring team and posted a 52-13-7 record but Norris’ attempts to get a league launched did not gain support. Included are seven Lions game programs including home games against Helsinki I.F.K., the Dutch Internationals and Djurgarden I.K. and a road program from a game in Sweden against Frolunda. There are also a pair of 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" photos of Polonich posed in his London Lions uniform, a vintage London Lions pennant, a glass vase with the Lions logo on it, a London Lions fan club pin and two pro-quality London Lions crest that are most likely team-issued and don’t appear to have ever been sewn on a jersey. One of the crests is displayed on a scrapbook page, one of seven double-sided pages with a variety of photos and newspaper and magazine clippings about Polonich and the team. Comes with Dennis Polonich’s signed LOA.
