Valery Kharlamov was an obvious choice to represent his country at the 1972 Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan. On February 13, the Soviet Union defeated Czechoslovakia 5-2 to capture the gold medal. The USSR failed to lose during the tournament, winning four and tying one during the five-game series. Kharlamov led all nations represented at the Olympics in scoring, collecting 9 goals and 6 assists during those five games. Returning to his league team, Valeri won the scoring championship with 40 points and was awarded the most valuable player honor for the 1971-72 season. This sensational 1972 Olympic Gold medal for ice hockey was claimed by Soviet hockey legend Valery Kharlamov . The obverse of the 3.25" award is a simple design and features a graphic player at the top. The reverse of the medal has the logo and wording for the XI Olympic Winter Games and the Sapporo '72 emblem and the upper portion of the medal has raised lettering reading "Ice Hockey". Obtained directly from the family of the late, great forward, this Olympic Gold medal comes with its original, easily-detachable ribbon. While the treasure displays quite nicely, the medal does suffer some condition issues. Some finish loss is visible on the upper portion of the medal where it attaches to the ribbon, we note some scuffs and scratches on the medal's face and the ribbon itself displays color fading on the lower portion and we note three pinholes from where it was once hung in Valery's home. Still, a significant find in that it was awarded to a hockey giant and only the second international player to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. From the estate of Valery Kharlamov, this important Olympic memento will come with a signed letter of provenance from the family.
