Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/22/2010
A sprawling Bill Barilko netted the overtime goal that delivered the 1951 Stanley Cup to the Maple Leafs. The promising defenseman would never play another game as his plane disappeared soon after while he was returning from a fishing trip. The Maple Leafs did not win another championship until 1962, the year Barilko's body was discovered in the wreckage of his airplane. This vintage expense receipt, dated Sept. 21, 1946 is signed at the bottom "Bill Barilko" in fountain pen. The receipt shows that the amount of $30.50 was paid to Barilko by Bob Davidson of the Leafs for "Sept. 17 to Sept. 21 training camp expenses" prior to the start of Bill's rookie season with the team. Also included is a cheque requisition signed by Hap Day and dated Feb. 7, 1947 for Barilko's $2,000 signing bonus. From the Maple Leaf Gardens Ledgers Collection.
