The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
Jackie Robinson made baseball history in 1946 when he signed a
contract with the Montreal Royals and paved the way for the
integration of African-Americans into the major leagues and bringing
an end to the disgraceful color barrier. This wonderful collection of
vintage magazines includes Robinson on the cover of the May 8, 1950
issue of Life magazine, as well as on the cover of the April 20, 1946
issue of Montreal daily The Standard’s magazine along with fellow
black Royals prospect, John Wright. Five other copies of The Standard
magazine include Royals-themed covers of the late-1940s and
early-1950s featuring Brooklyn Dodgers manager Leo Durocher and Royals
manager Clay Hopper, outfielder Al Gionfriddo and first baseman Chuck
Connors, who went on to even greater fame as TV’s The Rifleman.
