The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
Hockey historians will be ultra-intrigued and down right excited with
this December, 1859 issue of "The New England Farmer", a fascinating
find by our consignor whose research indicates that the engraving on
the opening page is the prime candidate for the title of "Earliest
Illustration of Hockey in a U.S. Publication." It indeed features a
game being played on ice with sticks and skates. Of particular
interest is the interpretation that the game is so much a part of
every day life in 1859 that it could act as a lead-in illustration in
a farmer's magazine to indicate the coming of winter, along with its
pre-Civil War date. The picture measures approx. 1-1/2" by 2-1/2",
while the 48-page publication is 7" by 10-3/4", with detached and
tattered but still present covers. Water damage to the pages does not
affect the highly-significant picture, the latter helping to cement
the puzzle of the origins of the world's greatest game!
