The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
This card of Montreal Canadiens goalie Georges Vezina was No. 13 in the set of 30 tiny cards produced by Maple Crispette for the 1924-25 season. Aside from the extremely rare Sprague leghorn card, Vezina's card trails only Howie Morenz's as the most coveted card of the lot. Of note with respect to this particular Vezina card are slightly dented/rounded corners, a rough cut along the top edge and a few minor and small creases along the right side of the card. The great Canadiens goalie won his second Stanley Cup in 1924 and his career was winding down when this card was issued, though no one foresaw its tragic end. The 38-year-old collapsed in his crease from a high fever during the Canadiens' first game of the 1925-26 season and he was subsequently diagnosed with advanced tuberculosis. The Canadiens donated a trophy in his name to be awarded to NHL's top goalie in the wake of his death the following spring.
