The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
This amazing lot features the original signatures of hockey pioneers Edward Stanley and F.C. Chittick, both members of the Ottawa Hockey Club in the 1890s. Stanley was the son of Lord Stanley of Preston, the Canadian Governor General who donated the original Dominion Challenge Cup that came to bear his name, and he was a member of the Ottawa Rebels hockey team formed by his brother Arthur. Edward Stanley was Postmaster General of the United Kingdom at the time of the letter he has signed on General Post Office of London letterhead dated November 25, 1904 to J.T. Agg-Gardner, a longtime British MP for Cheltenham. Chittick played six seasons in goal for Ottawa from 1895 to 1900, the first four years in the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada and the last two in the Canadian Amateur Hockey League, the AHAC’s successor. Chittick’s original flowing signature appears on the upper left corner of this vintage U.S. Mail postcard. Outstanding signatures from two pioneers of Canadian hockey.
