A nice big flowing signature penned by Canada’s former Governor General and a bronze coin/medal featuring the raised images of Lord Byng of Vimy and Lady Byng bring forth the story of how the couple were hockey fans of the first order who often attended NHL games, notably in Ottawa, during Mr. Byng’s time as Governor General (1921-26). It was in admiration of Ottawa’s Frank Nighbor’s skills and gentlemanly play that prompted Lady Byng to present him a trophy following the ‘24-25 season. The Lady Byng Trophy still goes to the player who best combines a high level of play with sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct. Bold fountain pen “Byng of Vimy - General” signature is on a 5” by 7-1/2” sheet, while a coat of arms is included on the reverse of the 2” in diameter bronze piece.
