Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - March 2007
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/27/2007
Classic trophy is from the inaugural Canada Cup tournament in 1976 and is pretty much the nicest example we’ve ever seen. Members of Team Canada received championship trophies like this after beating Czechoslovakia in a best-of-three final, winning the first game 6-0 and then posting a 5-4 overtime win on a memorable goal by Darryl Sittler. He was one of 16 future Hall-of-Famers in the amazing Canadian lineup which also included tournament MVP Bobby Orr, Bobby Hull, Lafleur, Dionne, Perreault, Potvin, Savard, Robinson, Lapointe, Clarke, Barber, Esposito, McDonald, Gainey and Shutt. It was “Wow!” back then and “Wow!” to this day when remembering how potent the Canadian team was; the greatest Canada ever iced in the minds of most hockey observers. The performances of Orr, playing in pain but still dominating the best players in the world in what would be his swan song, and of goalie Rogie Vachon, are highlights which will live on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to witness the world class event. This heavy trophy in the shape of the tournament’s half maple leaf logo is 11 1/2” high and like we mentioned at the top, in outstanding condition. Contrary to others which we have handled and which exhibited bulging and cracking, this one is free of any such flaws. A metal plaque applied to the base is engraved “R. Alan Eagleson, Q,C. – Canada Cup 1976.” The architect of the Canada Cup tournaments which delivered some of the most exciting and dramatic international hockey battles, Alan Eagleson will sign a letter of authenticity to be included with this sensationally significant piece.
