Beginning his legendary career as a teenager in 1960 with a roll full of film of singer Brenda Lee along with a kiss on the cheek from the iconic songstress, John Rowlands is renowned for his photographs of some of the biggest musical acts in history including The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Johnny Cash and countless others. Rolling Stone, Life, Time and other industry magazines have all published his famous images, with over 100 album covers shot by the talented lensman. This collection of art prints that totals 5 have been signed by Rowlands and were produced from his original 1960s/70s negatives, and include a famous image of Bowie, along with The Beatles, Kiss, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. At 18” x 24” and on glossy archival photostock, just the Kiss image is in colour, with a notation in Rowlands hand on each, along with the year each image was taken, with all 5 signed in black marker over the lower right corner. We should also note that The Beatles and Bowie images present horizontally. This collection will make an impressive display.
The notations listed on each art print is as follows, along with information from our consignor; THE BEATLES – “Beatles ’65 Hot Stove Lounge – M.L.G.” Taken on August 17,1965 at Maple Leaf Gardens “Hot Stove Lounge” press conference in Toronto on the day of the concert. John Rowlands had asked George if he and John Lennon instead of sitting side by side next to Paul and Ringo would mind standing up behind them for a different look than the standard sitting next to each other photo at the press conference, George and John obliged and this is how this photo happened with George looking directly to John; DAVID BOWIE – “Bowie – The Archer 1976” Known worldwide as “The Archer” this photo was taken on February 26, 1976 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. John captured the photo 30 feet from the stage of David in an archer type pose. David Bowie has gone on record as saying it is one of his favourite photos ever taken of him and it was also the photo of David chosen in a worldwide advertising campaign for the “David Bowie is” exhibition that made its debut at the Victoria and Albert museum in London, England in 2013 and has gone on to museums around the world; KISS – “Kiss Varsity 1976” Gene, Paul, Ace and Peter the original lineup captured At Varsity Stadium in Toronto on September 6, 1976 on the Destroyer/Spirit of 76 Tour. Taken backstage just before they received their Canadian Platinum record award for sales of their album “Destroyer”. This is Kiss at the height of their powers, Destroyer would catapult Kiss to worldwide fame; JIMI HENDRIX – “Jimi Hendrix Maple Leaf Gardens May 3, 1969” Taken May 3, 1969 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Considered by many the greatest guitarist of all time. Jimi Hendrix is captured here by John playing his famous white 1968 Stratocaster, it is perhaps the most iconic electric guitar in history, the same guitar he would play The Star Spangled Banner on, a few months later at the legendary Woodstock concert; BOB MARLEY – “Bob Marley 1978 Maple Leaf Gardens”. Taken June 9, 1978 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto , this photo according to John is one of his most asked about whenever he does a presentation or exhibition , everybody wants to know what Bob Marley was like, universally one of the most loved artist of all time. Regarding the condition of the group, the collection shows handling wear including the odd surface indentation, with touches to most of the corners.
