Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
Celebrating the historic night legendary Montreal Canadiens star Jean Beliveau scored his milestone 500th career goal, we have a unique sculpture that was presented to the superstar by Hockey Night in Canada, on "Jean Beliveau Night", March 24, 1971. Scored during his final NHL season, the important marker was plotted against Gilles Gilbert of the Minnesota North Stars, on Feb 11, 1971. Executed by artist Steve Yuranyi with his small plaque placed over the front left corner, the 24 ½” x 18 ½” x 12” display feature’s a well sculpted Beliveau, wonderfully depicted in fluid movement, scoring his milestone goal as a helpless Gilbert looks on. The top section is thick removable Plexiglass, with a plaque over the bottom front right corner listing the particulars in French, including “500th Goal”, “Hockey Night in Canada” and “24 Mars 1971”. A signed LOA from the Beliveau family will accompany this one-of-a-kind work.
Bathed in an even layer of patina, the sculpture remains in beautiful condition, with heavy scratches and wear to the Plexiglass cover. Beliveau was only the 4th NHL player to reach the 500-goal milestone and he did so by recording a hat trick in his 500th-goal game. He would retire at the end of the season after winning his 10th Stanley Cup as a player with the Montreal Canadiens.
