The Montreal Canadiens’ acquisition of Frank Mahovlich in January of 1971 was always considered by longtime Habs’ general manager Sam Pollock as one of the top two most beneficial trades of Pollock’s career. Coming over from Detroit, the Big M contributed 17 goals and 41 points in 38 games during the second half and then led all playoff skaters with 14 goals and 27 points as Montreal upset Boston and went on to win the Stanley Cup. Frank then, in his three full seasons with the red, white and blue, posted his two most lofty season point totals of his career (96, 93), while enjoying campaigns of 43, 38 and 31 goals. Another Cup in ‘72-73 and his 500th NHL goal are other memorable highlights. This is the first contract Mahovlich signed with the Canadiens, prior to the ’71-72 season. It called for an $80,000 salary and included bonus clauses that led to Frank earning some nice additional $$$. The Big M received $200 for each goal over thirty including playoffs, $2000 for finishing in the league’s top ten of point-getters, and $50 for each plus/minus over 20 (he was +42). Standard player’s contract is signed on the front in blue ballpoint by then league president Clarence Campbell and on the back by one of hockey’s all-time greatest left wingers, as well as by Canadiens’ president David Molson. A truly thought-provoking document that conjures up wonderful images of big Frank!
