The Frank Mahovlich Auction - October 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/18/2005
Very special memento represents Frank Mahovlich's name being engraved on Lord Stanley's coveted trophy for the first of six times. The Toronto Maple Leafs began a string of three consecutive Stanley Cup triumphs in the spring of 1962, putting an end to the team's 11-year Cup drought, the longest the franchise had known up until that point. Following his 48-goal output a year earlier, Mahovlich struck for 33 goals in '61-62 and his team-high 71 points were fifth best in the league. In the semi-finals Toronto took out the Rangers in six games with Frank setting up Red Kelly for the all important double overtime game-winner in game 5. The Black Hawks were the opposition when the finals opened in Toronto, the Leafs taking the first game 4-1 thanks to Mahovlich's game-winner on the power play. After Toronto went two games up, the Hawks evened the series on home ice before the Leafs blasted Chicago 8-4, Bob Pulford scoring a hat trick and the Big M adding a pair. The deciding game back in Chicago was scoreless until Bobby Hull scored midway through the third period. The crowd of course erupted but was quieted when Bob Nevin converted Mahovlich and Bob Baun passes to tie the game just 93 seconds later. Then Dick Duff, while on the power play, flipped in the Cup-winner with just under six minutes to go. Among the Toronto heroes were Pulford, who collected seven goals, and Tim Horton, who set a Leaf record with 13 assists in 12 playoff games. Mahovlich averaged a point a game with six goals and six assists and like his teammates received a miniature replica of hockey's ultimate prize. The names of the players, including Lady Byng trophy winner Dave Keon, are engraved in three columns on the barrel, beneath the names of Leaf executives Smythe, Clancy, Imlach, Ballard and Bassett. The silver-plated trophy exhibits spots of tarnish and silver loss, most notably on the back half of the barrel where there is no engraving, as well as around the lip of the bowl. Cherished for over 40 years by Frank Mahovlich who will sign a letter of authenticity that will be included with this stirring keepsake.
