Serving in the Canadian Forces after retiring, goaltender Ed Staniowski was the inaugural recipient of the CHL Player of the Year award in 1975, with his NHL career consisting of 219 games spread over 10 seasons while skating for St Louis, Winnipeg and Hartford. Originally obtained directly from Staniowski, we have a mask worn by the Moose Jaw native from approx 1982 to 1985, including with the Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers and Salt Lake Golden Eagles (CHL). The work of noted maker extraordinaire Greg Harrison, the fiberglass mask witnessed a number of changes occurring throughout its NHL and later CHL service. In solid white with a blue and red design, the strapping appears original, with the back plate intact. The interior includes a trio of thin pads, with additional padding added at each side of the inside chin section by way of white stick tape. Heavy use is exhibited, with surface marks, scratches and abrasions throughout.
Initially worn with the Winnipeg Jets in 1982-83 and briefly in 1983-84 before his trade to Hartford and sporting the current red and blue design along with Jets logos on each side that were painted over, the mask was called into service next with the Whalers briefly in 1983-84 with green paint visible beneath the restored red over the chin. Next, the mask was worn in 1984-85 with the CHL’s Salt Lake Golden Eagles, with the blue portions of the mask then painted yellow (traces remain). The mask was later used by Staniowski post-career and was restored to the original design minus the Jets logos. We should also note that the mask accompanied Staniowski to Afghanistan where he escorted the Stanley Cup in 2007 for an NHL Alumni tour with the troops.
