Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Dating to “Eddie the Eagle’s” second season in “The Lone Star State” as a member of the Dallas Stars in which he posted a record of 35-15-9 in 61 games played, Belfour would best the likes of fellow HOFers Grant Fuhr, Patrick Roy and Dominik Hasek in the playoffs as Dallas would win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Awarded the William M. Jennings Trophy at the end of the year, offered here is this mask worn by Belfour during that fruitful season. A Warwick made offering that feature’s Ed’s beautiful trademark eagles over each side of the protective head piece, his customary “Make-a-Wish Foundation” design resides over the chin section. Sporting a white cats eye cage over the front of the mask and retaining all the padding on the interior as well as the dual coloured black and white strapping harness to coincide with the placement of the custom graphics, the sweatband and chin cup are also present on the inside of the mask and it should be noted that the cage that is in place over the front of the mask is different than what is seen in the photo-match that is listed below. Displaying additional imagery over the backplate that includes a 1941 Willys Coupe advertising Ed’s racing company, named after his Carman, Manitoba hometown and "B1" along the bottom, the interior of the mask has had various Warwick stickers affixed to it, including two (2) behind the left ear and one (1) behind the right ear, with the decals on both sides partially covering up handwritten particulars penned by Gary Warwick in gold ink in the same areas. Additionally, a pair of safety stickers as well as another Warwick decal appear affixed on the inside of the chin, with the makers label displaying a handwritten manufacture date of 9-15-98 (September 15th, 1998). Incorrectly displaying "97/98" handwritten in blue marker by Belfour beneath the top section and then signed by him overtop of that in thin gold ink that displays well, the mask shows game-use via a couple of scattered marks/abrasions throughout the piece, a blue mark behind the right ear, a few scratches throughout, a couple of shallow spider cracks above the right eyebrow, fraying to the black strap over the right side of the jaw and chips to the edge of the shell at the corners underneath both ears. Hailing from Belfour's personal collection, his signed LOA will accompany the piece and the mask will come housed in a custom green and yellow Warwick mask bag that has "Custom Made for Ed Belfour Dallas Stars" embroidered into it.
Regarding the photo-match, the mask is matched with Getty Image #53121531, an undated photo from the 1998-99 season, to the placement and sizing of the details in the paint job of the mask that is seen over its right side.
