Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020

Led by iconic superstars Gordie Howe and Terry Sawchuk, the Detroit Red Wings featured a powerhouse club throughout the 1950s that was unfortunately overshadowed by the mighty Montreal Canadiens. As the early 1960s emerged, the boys from Motor City would advance to the Stanley Cup finals four times in just six seasons. Hailing from that competitive era, we have a highly desirable Detroit Red Wings jersey. Transitioning from the traditional wool used for hockey sweaters since the game’s inception, the 1960s witnessed the use of durene by NHL clubs, with the offered sweater a wonderful example with fully embroidered team crest along with “11” over the sleeves and verso in single twill. There is also a label from team supplier Olympic over the collar (correct for the era), along with a size “46” fly tag. We should note that the players who wore #11 with the Red Wings during the era that could have possibly worn this sweater include Jim Peeters, Val Fonteyne, Warren Godfrey and Bob Dillabough.
Sporting a clean front and team crest with the colouration remaining rich, there are small holes over and near each elbow section (3 in total), with single team repairs over each lower sleeve.
