Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016

The premier defenceman of the Original Six era, Doug Harvey spent 13 glorious seasons in hockey’s holy land with Les Canadiens, winning a remarkable six Stanley Cups along the way. This stick was used by the HOFer in 1959, a Stanley Cup championship season, and it’s been team-signed by 18 including 8 deceased HOFers. A preferred CCM Pattern Made Professional model, “Harvey” and “2” are stamped onto the upper shaft, with the original tape on the blade and knob intact. As mentioned, 18 have signed, with all signatures fashioned in ballpoint including deceased HOFers Harvey, Beliveau (2), Plante, Geoffrion, Moore, Blake, Johnson and Maurice Richard.
The signatures all exhibit varying degrees of fading, with the Plante example especially light but legible. The stick exhibits nice use, with some wear to the blade and marks on the lower shaft. “1959” also appears handwritten near the heel, with a pair of small holes present along the shaft from a former mounting. A large “sawed in” groove is also present mid-way up the shaft. Others who have signed this prized stick include Provost, Goyette, Marshall, Pronovost, Backstrom, McDonald, Langlois, Talbot, Hicke and Bob Turner. We should also note that Bill Hicke played just a single playoff game for Montreal in the 1958-59 season, with the stick likely originating from the 1959-60 NHL season, where the Habs would be crowned as unprecedented 5-time Stanley Cup champions.
