Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Ruling the NHL with an iron hand for over three decades, Clarence Campbell first ascended the throne of the presidency of the NHL in 1946, and is best remembered for suspending Rocket Richard during the 1955 season, resulting in the "Richard Riot". Enshrined in the HOF in 1966, Campbell was later instrumental in the expansion of the NHL in 1967. This lot includes a Campbell document and telegram collection of approx 75 from circa 1946 and 1947, including three that are signed and 10 that are initialed (the initialed items include 9 telegrams and one letter on hotel letterhead). Highlights include a few copies of a letter addressed to Campbell from Len Peto regarding trying to acquire an NHL team for Philadelphia by purchasing the Montreal Maroons, minutes of the meeting from 1947 regarding Campbell's nomination of president of the NHL in 1946 with motions made and carried by Art Ross, James Norris and Jack Adams, and an interesting document with Campbell requesting a crest from a Leafs jersey, as he mentions planning to get a crest from each NHL team to make a framed display for his office. The four signed letters are in ballpoint, while the telegrams are initialed in red pencil crayon. The majority of the documents remain in excellent condition, still bound in their original duotang folder. A neat piece also included in the lot is an October 8th 1946 Buffalo Hockey Club letterhead signed by deceased HOFer Rudy Pilous.
