A product of the OHA's Kitchener Rangers who was selected 14th overall by the New York Rangers at the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft, Dave Maloney would go on to play a total of 657 games in the National Hockey League over the course of his career, recording 71 goals and 246 assists for 317 points, as well as compiling 1154 penalty minutes. The youngest player to serve as the captain of the fabled "Blueshirts", doing so beginning with the 1978-79 campaign in which New York would experience a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, Maloney played with his brother Don Maloney while with the Rangers and would be ranked at No. 34 all-time of the 901 New York Rangers who had played during the team's first 82 seasons in the 2009 book titled "100 Ranger Greats". Offered here, we present this Rangers captain's jersey worn by Maloney circa the 1980-81 season. A heavyweight mesh construction offering made by Stall and Dean, tagging from team supplier Gerry Cosby as well as size "52" and washing instruction labels are all affixed to the inner collar. Sporting a small loop style fight strap on the interior of the jersey, the front is decorated with "New York" going diagonally down the chest in the familiar dual layer drop-shadow red-over-white tackle twill letters while Maloney's number "26" appears in matching style over the sleeves and verso.
Of note, it needs to be pointed out that the sleeve numbers of the jersey have been professionally restored by William Henderson of The Dream Shop. Originally having only the number "2" on both sleeves in a straight block style that was utilized by the Rangers in both 1979-80 and 1980-81 based on photographs, Henderson restored the jersey to a more traditionally dual layer drop-shadow tackle twill style using team patterns and period photos over the original location of the original "26". Additionally, the jersey is accompanied by Henderson's Document of Restoration as well as the pair of original removed "2's" from the sleeves.
Displaying the distinguished captain's "C" over the left breast and showing good evidence of game wear and signs of use, stick marks and board burns are observed over the body and sleeves while red board paint transfers are found over the lower front as well. Also showing good pilling on the interior as well as light pilling/rubbing over the outside of both cuffs, an additional white paint transfer exists behind the right shoulder. An LOA will accompany the piece.
