Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
First granted "Exceptional Player" status by Hockey Canada to play with individuals a year older – a testament to his unbridled skill, Connor McDavid would score over 280 points in just a trio of OHL seasons with the Erie Otters before making his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers, on October 8, 2015 vs the St Louis Blues. The superstar would score his first NHL goal four nights later against Kari Lehtonen, in a 4-2 loss to the Dallas Stars. From his historic first contest in Edmonton during his rookie campaign, played on October 15, 2015, we have the Oilers jersey worn by McDavid while making his home game debut. Donning four jerseys for his premier home contest, this example was worn by McDavid during just the third period. The solid orange retro-style jersey sports labeling with “56” sizing, with NHL and Reebok crests affixed to the front and reverse necklines. Styled with the classic Oilers team crest that features embroidered detailing, “97” appears over the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with “McDavid” sewn to the affixed nameplate in matching material. A MeiGray patch numbered “M02806” is situated on the inside hem, and according to their population report, the jersey is an "Orange - Inaugural Retro 10/15/15 - 3rd Period" and "Worn in 3rd Period of Inaugural Retro Game on 10/15/15" example. An LOA from the Edmonton Oilers will accompany.
As mentioned, this was one of four jerseys worn by McDavid in his home opener on October 15, 2015. According to the accompanying team LOA, the warm-up jersey was kept for the Oilers archives, the first period jersey was retained by McDavid, and the second period jersey was kept to be marketed by the Oilers. It should also be noted that this game was the first time the Oilers wore these orange retro jerseys, and they were only worn once more before the November 6, 2015 injury that sidelined McDavid. Light game-use is exhibited on the desirable garment as expected, with no obtrusive wear or marks visible.
