Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Skating to a record of 13–47–10 during the 1950-51 National Hockey League season, the Chicago Black Hawks would see Roy Conacher lead the team in points with fifty (50) while Harry Lumley would play in sixty-four (64) of Chicago's games during his first season in the Windy City. Offered here, we present this stick signed by twenty (20) members of the 1950-51 Black Hawks that is attributed to have been used by Doug Bentley and also by Roy Conacher. A Northland made offering with their stamp over one side of the upper shaft, a stamp from Doug Laurie Sports at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto graces the other side. With Bentley's number "7" able to be made out in black marker below the knob (he only wore the number during the 1950-51 season), Conacher's number "9" has been penned over it in matching ink with photos of this era showing that Bentley used a knob like the one seen on the offered stick while Conacher used a different type of tape job on the knobs of his. Because of this, we can only assume that Conacher ran out of sticks at some point in a game and borrowed a stick from Bentley. Retaining its original tape job of white-over-black on the knob and black wrapped around the blade, of which some has been removed back towards the heel, "Bentley" is stamped over the shaft and a notation appearing to read "46 BEN" found handwritten in pencil on the underside of the blade. With one side of the accent sticker near the bottom of the shaft removed, twenty (20) members of the 1950-51 Black Hawks have signed the stick with black marker signatures that remain clear and legible despite their age, including deceased Hall of Famers Goodfellow (coach), R. Conacher, Mosienko, Bentley, Gadsby, Stewart and Lumley as well as Babando, J. Conacher, Guidolin, Brown, Powell, Bodnar, Morrison, Dewsbury, Dickens, McCaig, Colin, Pelletier and one other which is likely to be the signature of Eddie Leier. Exhibiting game-use in the form of a small number of dark marks on the shaft and other marks over the remaining blade tape, it is worth noting that the blade tape has lifted off the blade in areas and there is some wear/chips to the heel area as well, along with some discolouration to the shaft. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the piece.
