Seeing his National Hockey League career take off after the implementation of expansion beginning with the 1967-68 season, Cesare Maniago would go on to play 513 of his 568 games in the NHL with the Minnesota North Stars and Vancouver Canucks in the post “Original Six” era after playing in only 55 contests before the league expanded. Offered here, is this Minnesota North Stars jersey worn by Maniago during the 1968-69 season. Made by General Athletic and sporting a washed out tag from the company affixed inside the lower reverse, both size “50” and “A & B Sporting Goods” tags are sewn inside the inner collar. Of note, A & B Sporting Goods, based out of Minneapolis, MN, only supplied the North Stars with their jerseys during their inaugural season of 1967-68 and 1968-69. Decorated over the front of the garment with a North Stars team crest in layered tackle twill, the sleeves and verso have had Maniago’s number “30” sewn to them in matching style dual layer white-over-yellow tackle twill numerals. A spectacular durene material offering, the jersey shows wear in the form of a 1” long team repair over the front near the right shoulder, puck marks and abrasions over the front crest and body as well as the in the white stripe of the left sleeve, dark stains (possibly being blood) in the shoulder yoke, washed out stains (again, possibly being blood) over the lower front, stick marks/abrasions to both the sleeve and reverse numbers, numerous tiny fabric snags throughout and some pilling/fraying/loose threads on the interior.
A style differing from what the club wore during the start of their first season of 1967-68, the jerseys were worn by the team for a team photo taken during the late stages of that first season (seen in the included LOA) as evident by the lack of Bill Masterson’s presence, who passed away due to injuries suffered during a game on January 13th, 1968 and then during the 1968-69 season as well.
Additionally, a section of the included LOA appears to outline a possible photo-match to the jersey from a Minnesota based publication called “Paul’s Post” that dates from the beginning of the 1968-69 season, with the image appearing to show matches to the distinct thread nuances seen around the collar. Despite these, due to the lack of other images to compare it with and the low resolution, we are not calling it a definite photo-match.
