Appearing for half of his 14-season NHL career in the sweater of the famous Montreal Canadiens, Bill Hicke debuted for the unstoppable Habs in 1958-59, winning a pair of Stanley Cup championships with the club while also making two NHL All-Star Game appearances. Later seasons would be spent with the Rangers, Seals and Penguins, with Hicke also serving as an inaugural member of the WHA’s Alberta Oilers. This vintage Montreal Canadiens wool sweater was worn by Hicke during the 1962-63 NHL season. Stylistically matching the rare single-year Jean Beliveau specimen we sold recently, no labeling remains along the collar, with a single “Dry Clean with Care” tag affixed to the interior right seam. Styled with the iconic CH team crest of the sport’s most storied team fully administered in red, white and blue layered tackle twill, “8” appears over the sleeves and verso in matching material. The collar also features four-eyelet configuration on tie-neck construction. Exhibiting heavy use, the sweater sports wear to the team crest, with material pulls over the lower front and reverse. There is also red and blue discolouration over the lower sleeves and front with heavy pilling throughout, with pairs of team repairs situated over the left and right sleeve. The top section of the reverse number has also been repaired, with the threading torn away along the top right area of the left sleeve’s number. A scarce style cheered on by the Montreal Forum hopefuls in just the 1962-63 NHL season, this wool relic is symbolic of the venerated Original Six era, and serves as a tactile reminder of what the beautiful game once was.
