Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
A skilled goal scorer with 1,100+ NHL contests under his belt, Bernie Nicholls registered over 1,200 points throughout his career and is one of only eight players in history to score 70 goals in a single season. Selected by the Los Angeles Kings 73rd overall at the 1980 NHL Entry Draft and going on to play with the Kings as well as New York, Edmonton, New Jersey, Chicago and San Jose, offered here is this jersey worn by Nicholls as a member of the Rangers circa 1991. A heavyweight mesh construction offering made by CCM that features a Gerry Cosby label affixed to the inner collar, small remains of the original Maska and size tags that were also once affixed are seen inside the collar as well while both the CCM and NHL shield logos have been embroidered into the reverse hem. Decorated over the front with the familiar "Rangers" going diagonally down the chest in dual layer blue-over-red drop-shadow tackle twill letters, the sleeves, featuring Nicholls' preferred customized elastic cuffs, and verso have been styled with Nicholls' number "9" in matching style blue-over-red drop-shadow tackle twill numerals. Also having had "Nicholls" spelt out in matching style letters that have been sewn directly to the material of the upper reverse in a gentle arch, the fight strap remains intact on the interior and Nicholls has signed above it with a thin black marker ink signature that displays without issue. Showing just very light game-wear via a couple stick marks over the left forearm, the jersey comes accompanied by a copy of a letter that was signed by Nicholls stating that the jersey came from his personal collection and was worn by him during the 1990-91 season as well as an LOA from Grey Flannel Auctions and an Auction LOA from JSA for the autograph. Additionally, a Grey Flannel inventory tag is affixed to the interior as well.
Of note, research shows that size tags started appearing in jerseys starting with the 1991-92 season and it is not known if this jersey was possibly a playoff offering from 1990-91 (the Rangers were eliminated in the first round) or a 1991 pre-season example (Nicholls was traded one game into the season from New York to the Edmonton Oilers).
