Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/25/2015
The late pop artist Andy Warhol, who painted a portrait of Gretzky in the early-Eighties, was asked what he saw in his subject: "As an artist, what I see in Wayne is great joy and energy," he said. Warhol added, "I think it's great when a sports star can look like a movie star". This wonderful work, created on Lenox Museum board, was issued in 1984, limited to 300 signed and numbered pieces (this one is number 87), and placed in a wonderful gold, wooden frame measuring 43” x 51”, with white matte. Beautifully signed on the bottom of the piece by both Gretzky and Warhol, it’s preserved in excellent condition and ready to blow the minds of anyone who sees it. In the fifty years since he first appeared on the New York art scene, Andy Warhol has become synonymous with Pop Art and with the definition of fame as something that never lasts more than fifteen minutes. In the printmaking field alone, his output was prolific, and his appropriation of silkscreen as a fine art medium forever altered the way prints look. With similar prolific output, Wayne Gretzky forever altered the way the game of hockey was played, and although Warhol was not a big hockey fan, he also said of Gretzky "He's more than a hockey player, he's an entertainer". Wayne Gretzky was Canada's biggest celebrity in the early eighties and is still considered by many the greatest player of the game." This amazing offering comes with a COA from MuseumWorks Galleries, signed by 2 representatives of the well-established company.
